Climate Hearings II: Have you heard us? - Tanzania

10 minutes, November 2011

The world is gearing up for the international climate change negotiations, which take place in Durban, South Africa November 28 to December 9 this year. As decision makers from around the world sit together to talk about how to address climate change, it’s important to remind them that climate change is not something for the future. Climate change is here now, it’s impacting people’s day to day lives, and it’s effects over time, especially if not adequately addressed, will only worsen.

In Tanzania, climate change is very real, and serves to reinforce and influence the cycle of poverty if not properly identified and addressed. It is important that people from around the country tell their stories, and that their voices are heard and considered in national policy development and international negotiations.

On November 18th, ten citizens travelled to Dar es Salaam to testify in front of a panel of experts about the impacts climate change is having on their day to day lives. These are their stories…

Building on the Climate Theatre experience with the Bennde Mutale Theatre Group in South Africa Resource Africa has been active in Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya. Under the CliamteConscious programme we have trained community theatre groups in Namibia and Kenya and made the climate change communication performances Living Together and A Rat in the Kitchen, while in Tanzania the educational film The World Has Malaria was produced for community screenings, see the Climate Communication Films.

While working with their partner NGOs and with the communities a number of climate change stories have been seen and documented, see the ClimateConsious Shorts, where Colonial Dam looks into the history of a water dam, the Eastern Arc Mountains Refuge highlights how a conserved forest acts as a refuge from climate change, and Lake Liambezi in Transition looks inot the changes noticed in Caprivi.

Learning from the community initatives already taking place on the ground the Climate Change Resilience Films A Plain Plan and Solving the Caprivi Challenge highlight how communities can take charge of their natural resources and use these to build adaptive strategies.
